How to choose an organic shampoo

Organic shampoos and conditioners have their share of benefits as compared to the chemical-based shampoos. However, there are organic shampoos that might not suit your hair texture. Here are a few things that one should keep in mind before opting for natural shampoos...

Check if the shampoo is organic

Some shampoos might just claim that they are made out of natural ingredients. But five out of 10 ingredients will actually be chemical-based, that might harm your hair. It is advisable to research in advance than pick a shampoo without knowing its pros and cons.

Look out for these ingredients

When choosing an organic shampoo look out for ingredients like olive oil, cocount oil, organic tea tree, organic shea butter and aloe vera, among others.

Consult the doctor before use

Don't buy organic shampoos just because the label says so. There are different varieties in organic shampoos for different hair textures like oily or dry hair. It is best to consult the doctor before use.

Easy hacks to maintain curly hair

Curly hair is tough to manage. Apart from frizziness, other issues include dryness, tangled hair, split-ends, and many more. Here are a few simple.

No shampoo:

Also known as the no-poo method, many swear by this. Instead of shampoo, use a conditioner to wash your hair.

Use a t-shirt:

While drying your hair, switch your towel with a cotton t-shirt. It reduces breakage and frizzy hair.

Use a hairnet:

For gentle curls, shower with a hairnet on. It cleans the hair while maintaining the hair.

Wash without a wash:

Between hair washes, you can refresh your curls by just spraying a refresher. Mix equal amounts of leave-in conditioner and water. Spray it all over your hair and put a hairnet on to maintain curls, till your hair dry.

Home remedies to take care of coloured hair

Here are some handy tips

1. First of all, you need to practice proper hair care. Look for sulfate-free shampoos to wash your hair so that your color is protected.

2. Do not wash your hair more than 2-3 times a week so that you can maintain your vibrant tresses!

3. Thirdly, make sure you have a strong conditioner at home. Coloured hair tends to be drier and more damaged, so conditioners with natural proteins will help strengthen the hair shaft and make your hair stronger.

4. Do regular coconut oil massage. The oil helps seal the cuticle, making your hair shinier and healthier!

5. Finally, home hair masks can also be a boon to your manes. Once a week, mix avocado, egg and some olive oil and apply to your hair. Shampoo it off after it dries for absolutely luscious locks!

Shoo away summer hair problems

Colouring your locks or taking a cool dip in the pool may be a problem for your hair during summer. Know how to protect your precious locks.

Kiran Lohia, managing director, Lumiere Dermatology suggests the following tips:

Hair colour fading:

The sun's strong rays can often cause your hair colour to change due to its temporary bleaching effects. Wear a hat to protect hair. If not that, you can wear products with sun protection on your tresses.

Green hair:

Swimming is a great way to cool yourself, but the chlorine present in it can make your hair turn green. Look for chlorine-removing shampoos so that your hair can return to its natural colour! And, try to wear a swim cap to reduce the amount of chlorine your hair is exposed to.

Forehead breakouts because of bangs:

Greasy bangs sticking to the face can block your skin's pores leading to breakouts. Try to keep your bangs or hair off your face so that your skin can breathe.

High frequency for your hair

High frequency therapy is a type of intensive hair treatment to cure dandruff, hair-fall or alopecia, carried out by treating your hair with high-frequency infra and ultra rays.

Several salons in Mumbai have started using this therapy as something of a quicker solution to their hair-related problems.

What is it?

It utilises a transparent rod-like tool that is plugged in, has two to three different types of knobs that need to be fitted in front of it for different types of treatments. Usually, a wide comb is fitted. A tool used for treating dandruff that looks like a long handled comb generates current when brought in contact with the scalp. The second is an ultra ray treatment given through a distance with the use of a bulb.

Treatment procedure

The treatment begins by separating the hair in four-five different partitions, then unknotting it smoothly. After this, the comb that emits infra rays is used on various portions of the affected scalp. This is process is done for two-three minutes, followed by a thorough oil massage for about 20 minutes. Then, a moisturizing hair mask is applied to every strand of the hair from root to tip and left untouched for about 15 minutes. Then, this masked hair is treated with steam and is then exposed to ultra rays through a bulb for five-seven minutes. The treatment lasts for 45 minutes and one needs to take a head wash only the next morning. The treatment also includes pressure point massages for the neck and back.

Beauty expert Jaishree Shah says, "The best part is that this process doesn't hurt at all, one might just feel slight irritation when the mouth of the comb touched the scalp. However, you get used to it gradually. This treatment requires about eight sittings and your dandruff is completely treated."

This treatment requires a minimum of ten continuous sittings, which can be done twice or thrice a week. Post the ten sittings, one should not stop the treatment completely, but continue doing it on a fortnightly basis for better and long lasting results.

Beauty expert Bhavna Daniel, explains, "Infra rays are given prior to the treatment just when the hair is unknotted. The device is touched to scalp while the treatment and hence it shows visible effects. While, ultra rays are given in the form of a bulb, at the end of the treatment i.e. after steam. The ultra rays are given from a distance and not brought close to the scalp or hair."

Benefits of infra and ultra rays

  • Improves blood circulation
  • Helps generate new cells
  • Exfoliates hair growth
  • Treats dandruff effectively
  • Prevents itchy scalp
  • Stops hair fall gradually
  • - Helps keep hair growth constant

Make your own anti-dandruff shampoo

Have you tried every anti-dandruff shampoo in the market, but still haven't found one that works for you? Try making your own at home.

You'll need:

Baking powder: 2 tbsp
Warm water: 1 cup
Vinegar: 1 tbsp
Mint juice: 2 tbsp

Directions:

Put the baking powder and warm water in a clean bowl and mix well. Then add the vinegar and mix well. Make a juice of fresh mint leaves and add only the thick filtered part of the juice to the mixture. Finally, stir everything together well and keep aside for a while. Apply this solution to your hair twice a week.

Is washing your hair too often okay?

Experts talk about tackling greasiness and how often it is okay to wash your tresses

It's certainly hot and you're definitely sweating it out while commuting to work, at the gym or even at home. These increased levels of perspiration might make you feel like washing your hair every day. Experts tackle common questions that you may have about this predicament.

Is a daily hair wash okay?

It's not necessary to do so, feels city cosmetologist Dr Sama Rais. "Preferably not everyday as shampoos have harsh chemicals and can remove the essential oils from the scalp, causing an over-drying of the scalp. Thrice a week is good enough. Even if you perspire, just pour plain water on the hair. If your hair suffers from Hyperhidrosis (problem of excessive sweating), you may have to wash everyday. But use only a mild shampoo, which is suitable for to your hair," she says.

Overcoming dandruff issues

Dandruff and an itchy scalp is probably one of the biggest and most common offshoots of the sun playing havoc on hair. Says cosmetologist Dr Jaishree Manchanda, "There are two types of dandruff, oily and dry. Oily dandruff is dangerous as its eats away the pigment of your hair, while dry dandruff falls off. The former can give rise to numerous problems like pimples, pigmentation, etc, as dandruff on the scalp prevents blood circulation." She also advises staying away from using heavy oils. "If you have oily skin, just use a lighter oil, like olive oil, and massage it for 15 minutes, followed by a hot towel treatment, then wash it off. Home-based treatments include putting ginger juice on the scalp. Leave it overnight and wash it off. Also, wash hair every alternate day with a mild, anti-dandruff shampoo. Eating green vegetables like palak and methi helps the hair," she adds.

Using henna, a myth

Henna actually dries the hair and most stylists will tell you should not use it, saysa Dr Rais, adding, "Henna makes the hair more porous and can can turn hair brittle. Instead, use a good conditioner, which has a sunscreen or even a hair serum."

How to use hair serums

Hair serums improve the texture of the hair and untangle it, leaving it softer. They are perfect for that dry, frizz that summer bestows. Anyone can use it but there are rules to follow. "If you use too much, the hair can look oily, so, take only a few drops on the fingertips and apply on the hair, not scalp," says Dr Manchanda, adding, "Look for products that have argan oil as well as those with walnut and almond oil. Avoid those having silicon. After you have used a hair serum, don't use a spray after that."

Tips for healthy hair

  •  Trim away damaged ends of the hair, especially if they are frizzy.
  •  Wear a hat, scarf or peak cap (not too tight) to protect hair from damaging UV rays.
  •  Use a hair sunscreen if you are going out between 11am and 4 pm as that is when the sun's rays are harshest.
  •  Always use a little conditioner on the hair before you go swimming.

Thinking about a hair spa?

States naturopath Nirmala Shetty, "Go natural when it comes to a hair spa. Look for nutrients in what nature provides us. For instance, grind hibiscus into a paste and apply on hair. It darkens and strengthens hair roots. Methi (rich in iron and darkens hair) and neem (antibiotic and has germicidal properties) also increase hair strength. Aloe vera is a powerful antioxidant and can tackle scalp allergies and boils. It is also a great hair strengthener. Avocado is full of antioxidants and is especially good for those who have coloured hair."

All you need to know about rebonding

Before you go ahead for a major transformation with rebonding, it is necessary that you know all about the procedure beforehand and be well aware of what it entails.

In rebonding, chemicals are used to break the natural bonds of the cells in the hair and then they are rearranged to get straight hair, Rod Anker, Creative Director of Monsoon Salon and Spa, that offer a huge discount on rebonding, said. Anker explained that a relaxant or a softener is used to break the natural bonds in the hair, followed by a neutralizer to re-bond the structure again, giving you the desired texture.

Suguna Shah, of Lakme Salon, continued saying that rebonding is almost hassle-free - especially if you are doing it during the summers or as the climate warms up. You just need to condition hair well and protect it from heat and it will not get damaged, she asserted. Since care in the first few days after rebonding is crucial, Shah said that it is necessary that you keep hair covered and protected. Also do not wet your hair for three days after the procedure, because the chemicals have to seep in and settle. (

How to tackle hair fall

Jennifer Aniston is reportedly worried about her excessive hair fall and is undergoing scalp treatments to cure it. But you don't need to invest in expensive treatments to deal with hair fall. TOI lists some simple precautions to keep hair fall at bay...

  • Don't comb your hair when it is wet since this increases the chances of breakage. Wait for your tresses to dry before you brush them.
  • Be gentle while towel-drying your hair. Rubbing your hair vigorously can lead to unwanted breakage.
  • Use a wide-toothed comb since it gently detangles your hair and reduces the risk of breakage while combing.
  • Clean your hair brush and comb regularly. Dirt tends to collect on them, and this can also lead to hair fall.
  • Oil your hair regularly and indulge in a hot oil treatment once a week to keep your scalp healthy. This will keep you from losing hair.
  • Your shampoo may be harsh on your hair, so try switching to a more gentle shampoo. Chemicals can strip your scalp of its natural oil, leading to breakage.
  • Don't tie your hair tightly or style it often. Products can damage your hair and certain hairstyles can add a lot of strain to your roots. Also, avoid using elastic or rubber bands.
  • A balanced diet is key to healthy hair. Hair fall could be a sign that your body is not getting the nourishment it needs, so consume proteins and food rich in iron, zinc, vitamins A, B complex, C, E, and Omega-3 fatty acids.

How to care for coloured hair

All of us are fond of coloured hair. But post-colour hair care is also important. Follow these tips, then go for that long desired colour treatment done

Deep condition your hair

Make sure you keep your hair well-conditioned by using either post-hairwash conditioner, a leave-in conditioner, serum or a hair mask. It is very important to maintain the moisture balance in your hair, especially after treating it with colour. A homemade mask, made of either mayonnaise or honey, will help replenish the hair's lost moisture. Similarly, hair masks that include ingredients like jojoba, aloe, etc, are beneficial.

Avoid hair styling products

Coloured hair is known to get dry after a while, if you fail to moisturise it properly. It aggravates with blow drying and use of hair styling products like straighteners and curlers. They make your scalp flaky, which attracts dandruff. Also, make sure you leave your hair to dry, naturally.

Use colour protection shampoo

There are special products designed for colour-treated hair and they help prevent the colour from fading out. Also, avoid hot water hair wash, use only cold water.

Oil your hair often

Always remember what your mom said, oil your hair ever day. Oil is the best thing for your hair. It not only provides nourishment, but also helps moisturise your hair and scalp.

How to take care of rebonded hair

Rebonding is a quick option for those who want absolutely straight hair but are not born with it. This is a process of altering the chemical structure of hair so it becomes straight for a considerable period of time. Rebonded hair will certainly not trouble you too much if it's taken care of in the right way.

"Ensure you apply trusted products during the treatment to minimize damage at the start. Use the right post-care products too, and use them properly. Any conditioner needs to be washed away completely as residue will cause itching, hairfall and dandruff," says Rod Anker, Creative Director of www.monsoonsalon.com and Vogue's Colorist of the Year.

If your hair is not too greasy, refrain from shampooing everyday. Try alternate days or co-washing - using conditioner as a shampoo and just rinsing it away. Keep your hair safe from environmental factors - harsh sun, cold winds and rains. Use a hat or umbrella. Hair serum creates a barrier between your hair and the outside and helps protect it better.

Pammy Kaul of Scratch Salons also advises, "Have your hair trimmed on a regular basis for preventing split ends." Use hair masks frequently or get hair spas done. Your hair needs moisture and nutrition regularly.

How to postpone greying of hair

What wrinkling is to skin, greying is to hair. Both are signs that herald age. But it can be postponed if taken proper care

We despair as much over the wrinkles that begin to line our face, as we do over the hair that turns white. Ageing, however, is a natural process. With time, the body ages and the signs of ageing manifest themselves... greying is one of them. Sometimes, the hair begins to gray prematurely and presents a problem, mainly because the exact cause of graying is not known as yet.

To understand the graying process, one must have a basic idea of the structure of the hair. Each hair consists of concentric layers. The outermost layer is the cuticle, which is made up of tiny transparent scales that overlap each other. The cuticle protects the hair and contributes to its shine. The second layer is the cortex. It is in the cortex that pigment or colouring matter forms and gives the hair its colour. For reasons not yet known, the pigment does not form. When the pigment fails to form, the hair is white. The white hair mixes with the dark hair and gives the impression of grey hair. Naturally, when the white hair appear, the question of how to deal with them causes much concern, not only from the aspect of concealing them, but also to check further graying.

To begin with, the hair that have turned white cannot become dark again, except by dyeing or colouring. Today, dyeing and colouring of the hair has become common practice. In fact, colouring of the hair is very much in fashion. Today, it is not merely a matter of hiding gray hair. Unfortunately, most people do not know the way the structure of the hair can be affected by using chemical dyes and colourants.

Semi permanent methods, like hair rinses and creams, last for 4 to 6 shampoos. They also work by penetrating the cuticle, but do not cause as much damage as the permanent dyes, which actually enter the middle layer and change the pigments. Semi-permanent methods are used for disguising grey hair, or for lending a richer colour to dull hair. Repeated use of semi-permanent colourants also causes enough hair damage.

Henna is the only natural hair colourant that is widely used. In the ancient days, walnuts and indigo were used along with henna to colour the hair. Modern colourants made from vegetable dyes are also available, in the form of "hair mascaras." These are somewhat like crayons, which are used to colour strands of the hair. They can disguise strands of gray hair quite effectively. They also help to add glamour to the hair, by colouring strands a different colour from the normal hair colour. Hair mascaras are temporary methods of colouring the hair. They are easier to use and remove and the effect lasts till the next shampoo. The main advantage is that they assure safety from damage to hair structure and texture. We have introduced Herbal Hair Mascaras for streaking the hair, to add glamour, or to camouflage grey hair. They are available in many shades, like black, brown, copper, bronze, gold and starlight blue.

Using amla with henna also helps to check graying. To add amla to henna, soak a handful of dry amla in about 2 to 3 cups water overnight. Next morning, strain the water, but do not throw it away. Grind the amla. To the henna powder, add the ground amla, 4 teaspoons each of lemon juice and coffee, 2 raw eggs and enough amla water, so that the henna mixes into a thick paste. If one does not wish to use eggs, they may be omitted. Apply the paste on the hair, so that the entire head is covered. Keep it on for two hours and wash off with plain water. This can be done once a week.

However, if you have coloured your hair with a chemical colourant, henna should not be used, as it will interfere with the colour of the chemical colourant you have used. So, you can wait for your chemical colourant to wear off and then start using the henna and amla treatment. Apart from concealing gray hair and checking further graying, the use of henna and amla have other benefits. Natural products are non-toxic and do not harm the structure of the hair. The body is also safe from the build-up of toxins and their harmful effects. A natural dye like henna does not enter the hair shaft. In fact, it coats the hair shaft and adds body and strength to the hair. Henna also has so many benefits for the scalp. It restores the natural balance and actually promotes the health of the scalp and hair.

If you wish to use a chemical colourant, ensure that it does not contain ammonia and remember to condition your hair after shampoo. Use shampoos that have built-in conditioners. Herbal shampoos for damaged hair would also help. Those who colour or dye their hair should give their hair regular hot oil treatments. Once or twice a week heat pure coconut oil and apply on the scalp and hair. Then dip a towel in hot water, wring out the water and wrap the towel around the head, like a turban. Keep it on for 5 minutes. Repeat the hot towel wrap 3 or 4 times. This helps the hair and scalp absorb the oil better. Use a mild herbal shampoo to wash the hair. One can also use hair oils and shampoos which contain natural ingredients like amla, bhringaraj, brahmi, reetha, shikakai, henna and so on.

As amla is said to check graying, one can drink daily the juice of one raw amla added to a glass of water. Some doctors also believe that strengthening the immune system also helps to check graying. Therefore, you can ask your doctor to prescribe Vitamins B-Complex and C.

One of the most important aspects of beauty is to be aware of the damage caused by chemical ingredients. Avoid treatments that mar the natural beauty of the skin and hair. The choice is yours.
