How to fix split ends !

There are several things you can do to prevent your hair from splitting.

After you apply conditioner in the shower, slowly run a wide-toothed comb through hair until all the tangles are out.
Get a haircut every six to eight weeks. It will remove split ends and keep your hair healthy and strong.

Never over-brush. A hundred brushstrokes is not necessary, and may lead to more splits than anything else.

Home remedies to take care of coloured hair

Here are some handy tips

1. First of all, you need to practice proper hair care. Look for sulfate-free shampoos to wash your hair so that your color is protected.

2. Do not wash your hair more than 2-3 times a week so that you can maintain your vibrant tresses!

3. Thirdly, make sure you have a strong conditioner at home. Coloured hair tends to be drier and more damaged, so conditioners with natural proteins will help strengthen the hair shaft and make your hair stronger.

4. Do regular coconut oil massage. The oil helps seal the cuticle, making your hair shinier and healthier!

5. Finally, home hair masks can also be a boon to your manes. Once a week, mix avocado, egg and some olive oil and apply to your hair. Shampoo it off after it dries for absolutely luscious locks!

Shoo away summer hair problems

Colouring your locks or taking a cool dip in the pool may be a problem for your hair during summer. Know how to protect your precious locks.

Kiran Lohia, managing director, Lumiere Dermatology suggests the following tips:

Hair colour fading:

The sun's strong rays can often cause your hair colour to change due to its temporary bleaching effects. Wear a hat to protect hair. If not that, you can wear products with sun protection on your tresses.

Green hair:

Swimming is a great way to cool yourself, but the chlorine present in it can make your hair turn green. Look for chlorine-removing shampoos so that your hair can return to its natural colour! And, try to wear a swim cap to reduce the amount of chlorine your hair is exposed to.

Forehead breakouts because of bangs:

Greasy bangs sticking to the face can block your skin's pores leading to breakouts. Try to keep your bangs or hair off your face so that your skin can breathe.

High frequency for your hair

High frequency therapy is a type of intensive hair treatment to cure dandruff, hair-fall or alopecia, carried out by treating your hair with high-frequency infra and ultra rays.

Several salons in Mumbai have started using this therapy as something of a quicker solution to their hair-related problems.

What is it?

It utilises a transparent rod-like tool that is plugged in, has two to three different types of knobs that need to be fitted in front of it for different types of treatments. Usually, a wide comb is fitted. A tool used for treating dandruff that looks like a long handled comb generates current when brought in contact with the scalp. The second is an ultra ray treatment given through a distance with the use of a bulb.

Treatment procedure

The treatment begins by separating the hair in four-five different partitions, then unknotting it smoothly. After this, the comb that emits infra rays is used on various portions of the affected scalp. This is process is done for two-three minutes, followed by a thorough oil massage for about 20 minutes. Then, a moisturizing hair mask is applied to every strand of the hair from root to tip and left untouched for about 15 minutes. Then, this masked hair is treated with steam and is then exposed to ultra rays through a bulb for five-seven minutes. The treatment lasts for 45 minutes and one needs to take a head wash only the next morning. The treatment also includes pressure point massages for the neck and back.

Beauty expert Jaishree Shah says, "The best part is that this process doesn't hurt at all, one might just feel slight irritation when the mouth of the comb touched the scalp. However, you get used to it gradually. This treatment requires about eight sittings and your dandruff is completely treated."

This treatment requires a minimum of ten continuous sittings, which can be done twice or thrice a week. Post the ten sittings, one should not stop the treatment completely, but continue doing it on a fortnightly basis for better and long lasting results.

Beauty expert Bhavna Daniel, explains, "Infra rays are given prior to the treatment just when the hair is unknotted. The device is touched to scalp while the treatment and hence it shows visible effects. While, ultra rays are given in the form of a bulb, at the end of the treatment i.e. after steam. The ultra rays are given from a distance and not brought close to the scalp or hair."

Benefits of infra and ultra rays

  • Improves blood circulation
  • Helps generate new cells
  • Exfoliates hair growth
  • Treats dandruff effectively
  • Prevents itchy scalp
  • Stops hair fall gradually
  • - Helps keep hair growth constant

How to take care of rebonded hair

Rebonding is a quick option for those who want absolutely straight hair but are not born with it. This is a process of altering the chemical structure of hair so it becomes straight for a considerable period of time. Rebonded hair will certainly not trouble you too much if it's taken care of in the right way.

"Ensure you apply trusted products during the treatment to minimize damage at the start. Use the right post-care products too, and use them properly. Any conditioner needs to be washed away completely as residue will cause itching, hairfall and dandruff," says Rod Anker, Creative Director of www.monsoonsalon.com and Vogue's Colorist of the Year.

If your hair is not too greasy, refrain from shampooing everyday. Try alternate days or co-washing - using conditioner as a shampoo and just rinsing it away. Keep your hair safe from environmental factors - harsh sun, cold winds and rains. Use a hat or umbrella. Hair serum creates a barrier between your hair and the outside and helps protect it better.

Pammy Kaul of Scratch Salons also advises, "Have your hair trimmed on a regular basis for preventing split ends." Use hair masks frequently or get hair spas done. Your hair needs moisture and nutrition regularly.

Naturally highlight your hair

Using chemicals results in dry, brittle, thin hair that is limp and lifeless. We all want to look beautiful and it doesn't harm doing some tricks to enhance your beauty. So this summer dump those saloon trips to get highlights instead with these easy tricks lighten hair naturally at home.

Lemon:

The best known of the natural hair highlighters is lemon. Put lemon juice mixed with honey onto your hair, leave mixture on your hair and sit in the sun. Wash your hair with normal shampoo. Condition your hair before and after using lemon because it can dry your hair. You will see your hair have become a shade lighter.

Chamomile tea:

Boil a pot of chamomile tea and allow it to cool completely. Wash and condition your hair normally, then rinse your hair with the tea. Relax outside in the sun with your tea-drenched hair for an hour or so. Repeat every other day until your hair has beautiful natural highlights.

Vinegar:

Wash with vinegar. Vinegar works to lighten hair. Wash and condition your hair normally, then rinse your hair with apple cider vinegar in the last rinse. Doing this on a regular basis will slowly lighten your hair over time.

Black tea:

Black tea is full of tannic acid which can bring out highlights in your hair over time. Brew a few cups of very strong black tea (using several tablespoons/teabags) and pour it through your hair. Let it soak for up to 30 minutes before rinsing out with warm water.

Foods for strong and healthy hair (expert tips)

Tried various shampoos, conditioners and hair treatments but nothing seems to work? The real reason for bad hair could be a poor diet. What you feed your hair internally has more effect on it than external factors like shampoos or hair packs. And there are certain essential nutrients that both your body and hair need to look healthy and strong. Dr Dinyar Workingboxwalla, a celebrity cosmetologist with clients like Jacqueline Fernandes, Lara Dutta and many more, explains how food plays an important role in the health of our hair and also lists down the essential ones we should all consume in his book ‘Beauty Unleashed: A Comprehensive Guide To Getting Perfect Skin And Hair’. Here’s an excerpt from the book.

The type, the length, the growth, the thickness, the thinness, curls and strength of your hair all depends on what you have inherited genetically, but the condition of your hair depends on the internal state of your body, which feeds the papillae that produces it. For the hair to be strong and beautiful, the cuticle and cortex have to be strong first. Any animal lover changes the look of his pet’s hair by altering its diet. The same goes for humans, too.

Each hair follicle depends on the current nutritional state of one’s blood stream and on adequate oxygen reaching each cell. If a person goes on a poor diet, or for some reason—like stress—has improper food, detrimental changes in the hair bulb can be detected in as little as three to four days. People going on a protein-free diet for ten days have found that when their hair has been plucked and analyzed microscopically, it showed significant changes in colour, texture and structure.

In my experience, I see a higher percentage of vegetarians with hair thinning problems. While many are extremely conscious of their diet and get all the required minerals, vitamins and basic nutrients, what is often neglected is protein, which makes up the core of hair. The essential amino acids that are the building blocks of keratin are most plentiful in animal products, and without adequate intake, less energy is available for hair follicle production.

• Eat lots of lean meat, especially liver which is high in iron and Vitamin B12, and also seafood, which contains the all-important iodine.

• You will also benefit from a sufficient intake of vitamins A, B and C, which are found in eggs, milk, fresh fruits and vegetables. A daily course of vitamins and oil capsules may help if your hair is dry and brittle.

• Use biotin and calcium panthothenate tablets if you suffer from hair fall.

• Hair is fed by the blood flowing to the follicles, so a good diet and circulation from exercise and massages are essential to give your hair shine and vitality.

Remember, just as the residue from drugs and medication and all the negative things that we put in our bodies show up in our hair, the positive results of nutritional care are also seen.

8 hair care treatments you can make yourself

Eggs, yogurt and honey are, at first glance, all components of a tasty breakfast — but they also happen to be hair treatment ingredients, and affordable, all-natural ones at that. And they're not the only ones. Did you know, for instance, that the oils in avocados more closely resemble our own skin's oils than any product in the beauty aisle does? Or that the mild acidity in lemon is an effective — and gentler — alternative to chemical-laden products? Next time your locks need a lift, save money by using one of these kitchen fixes.

For all hair types

"The [raw] egg is really the best of all worlds," says Janice Cox, author of "Natural Beauty at Home". The yolk, rich in fats and proteins, is naturally moisturizing, while the white, which contains bacteria-eating enzymes, removes unwanted oils, she explains.

To use:
For normal hair, use the entire egg to condition hair; use egg whites only to treat oily hair; use egg yolks only to moisturize dry, brittle hair, Cox says. Use 1/2 cup of whichever egg mixture is appropriate for you and apply to clean, damp hair. If there isn’t enough egg to coat scalp and hair, use more as needed. Leave on for 20 minutes, rinse with cool water (to prevent egg from "cooking") and shampoo hair. Whole egg and yolks-only treatments can be applied once a month; whites-only treatment can be applied every two weeks.

For dull hair

Styling products (as well as air pollution) can leave a film that both saps moisture and dulls shine — but dairy products like sour cream and plain yogurt can help reverse this damage. "Lactic acid gently strips away dirt while the milk fat moisturizes," says Lisa Belkin, author of "The Cosmetics Cookbook".

To use:
Massage 1/2 cup sour cream or plain yogurt into damp hair and let sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water, followed by cool water, then shampoo hair as you normally would. Treatment can be applied every other week.

For itchy scalp

To fight flakes — brought on by poor diet, stress and climate, among other factors — try a lemon juice and olive oil mixture in your hair. "The acidity in lemon juice helps rid your scalp of any loose, dry flakes of skin, while the olive oil moisturizes the [newly exposed] skin on your head," says Cox.

To use:
Mix 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, 2 tablespoons olive oil and 2 tablespoons water, and massage into damp scalp. Let mixture sit for 20 minutes, then rinse and shampoo hair. Treatment can be applied every other week.

For limp or fine hair

To add body to hair, reach for an unlikely beauty beverage: beer! The fermented drink contains generous supplies of yeast, which works to plump tired tresses, explains Cox.

To use:
Mix 1/2 cup flat beer (pour beer into a container and let it sit out for a couple of hours to deplete carbonation) with 1 teaspoon light oil (sunflower or canola) and a raw egg. Apply to clean, damp hair, let sit for 15 minutes, then rinse with cool water. Or add flat beer only to a spray bottle and spritz onto dry hair. "When the liquid evaporates, the remaining protein residue (from the wheat, malt or hops) continues to strengthen and structure hair," says Belkin. Treatments can be applied every other week.

For dry or sun-damaged hair

Whatever your hair-dehydrating demon — hard water, sun overexposure, your trusty flat iron — nature's sweetener can help. "Honey is a natural humectant, which means it attracts and locks in moisture," says Cox.

To use:
Massage approximately 1/2 cup honey into clean, damp hair, let sit for 20 minutes, then rinse with warm water. You can also add 1 to 2 tablespoons olive oil to loosen the honey for easier application. For extremely sun-damaged hair, trying mixing honey with 1 to 2 tablespoons of a protein-rich ingredient, like avocado or egg yolk, which will help replenish the keratin protein bonds that UV rays attack. Treatment can be applied once a month.

For oily or greasy hair

"Used properly, [cornmeal or cornstarch] is an inexpensive way to remove oil and grease," says Belkin.

To use:
Pour 1 tablespoon cornmeal or cornstarch into an empty salt or pepper shaker and sprinkle onto dry hair and scalp until you’ve used it all. After 10 minutes, use a paddle hairbrush to completely brush it out. Treatment can be applied every other day.

For frizzy hair

Home beauty experts swear by avocado — and not just to repair damaged hair. Its oils (which are light and moist like our own natural skin secretions) and proteins boast the best combination of nutrients for smoothing and weighing down unruly hair, explains Cox.

To use:
Mash up half an avocado and massage into clean, damp hair. Let sit for 15 minutes before rinsing with water. Amp up moisturizing power by combining mashed avocado with 1 to 2 tablespoons of a hydrating ingredient, like sour cream, egg yolks or mayonnaise. Treatment can be applied every two weeks.

For residue-ridden hair

"Nothing eats through product buildup like baking soda," Cox says. Sodium bicarbonate essentially breaks down anything acidic.

To use:
Mix 1 to 2 tablespoons baking soda with small amounts of water until a thick paste forms. Massage into damp hair and let sit for 15 minutes. Rinse with water, then shampoo hair. Treatment can be applied every two weeks.
